This week’s NiE NewsSplash page is Up in the air. The page introduces some simple flight concepts to students and lets them experiment. How things fly is above the level required for the age group, but there is a separate pdf lesson that introduces forces if you want to extend the scientific learning related to how flight is possible.
You can compare the types of aircraft, their speed, capacity and purpose. You could use the page as a springboard to explore the way the development of aircraft has changed the way we transport people and goods and made the world seem smaller.  Or examine the features that birds have that help them fly.
New flight technology is often in the news. Last week’s visit to NZ by the astronauts from Discovery space shuttle caused some recent excitement. More information and teaching suggestions can be found under the More information tab.

Page contents
Aircraft – students identify different types of aircraft and think about their uses
Make a helicopter – students make a paper helicopter and observe how it performs
Flight – features that help birds, helicopters and planes fly.  Students fill in the missing words
Flight news –some recent news stories about flight

The downloadable theme lessons include:
Flight in New Zealand – students match captions with news pictures about flight in New Zealand
Paper plane flights – students make and test three paper planes to find out which design performs the best
Forces that act upon planes – students read about the four forces that affect plane flight (drag, thrust, lift, gravity) and label a diagram
You can find these lessons under the Theme lessons tab.
