This week’s NiE X-Press page, published on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, is Newsmakers.

The page looks at who prepares news for consumption and some people that regularly feature in our newspapers. We ask students to consider how social media and new ICT technologies have affected the way news stories are collected, recorded, distributed and analysed.
Teaching suggestions and more information can be found under the More information tab on the left-hand menu.

Page contents
Where does news come from? – an introduction of who prepares news for consumption
Citizens as journalists – an explanation of how the public can contribute to the production of news reports and dissemination of news and information
People in the news – students match names and roles to well-known people that feature in the news
My news – students are directed to our NiE website where they can watch a NewsByte video tutorial on NiE TV to learn how to create their own news video clip.

The downloadable theme lessons include:
I’m in the news! – students imagine that they are in the newspaper and write an news article with a headline, picture and caption.
Responding to a news event – students look for examples in their newspaper of people responding to news events. The Student volunteer army are used as an example of responding to a news event.

You can find these lessons under the Theme lessons tab. Also, there are other news related theme lessons that can be adapted to suit your students. Just look in our Theme archive under:
