This week’s NewsSplash NiE page is about insects. The page starts off asking students to brainstorm words they associate with insects and what they know, think and feel about insects.  Some students may not like insects and not realise what an important job many insects do.  After working with this page, it is anticipated that students will gain a better understanding about the role of insects on Earth.

Nie page contents:
• An insect identification wheel
• How many insects are there in New Zealand and worldwide?
• What insects do and their role in the environment
• What are insects – a labelled diagram
• How to look at insects – some advice is given and students are asked to draw and label the body parts of the insect.

The downloadable worksheets include:
• A life cycle activity – students choose an insect and draw its life cycle
• An art activity – students make a collage of an insect
• Is it an insect?  Students decide whether an animal is an insect or not

Students may need library resources to do these activities, so plan ahead with your school librarian. These activities can be found under the Theme lessons tab.
