The world food shortage and increased prices has been highlighted in the news recently. Experts predict that the situation will continue to get worse in the future.
The page looks at the issue of worldwide food problems, the causes and possible solutions to the problem.
The topic of increased food prices and how to deal with effects, lends itself to a variety of practical learning experiences. You may want to look at developing the cooking, horticultural and problem solving skills of your students.
Teachers who focus on economics and mathematics may also find this page useful as a starting point to look at statistics and the global market.
The worksheets both use news articles for activities. These worksheets can be found under the Theme lessons tab.
The first one is about New Zealand families struggling to feed themselves and needing help form a variety of agencies. The activity asks students to develop business cards for those agencies.
The next worksheet is also about the effects of rising food prices on New Zealand families. The news article contains ideas about how families can reduce their food bill and to make the most of what they can afford. Students are asked about what changes their families could make to reduce their food costs.
For teaching ideas and more information, see under the Additional Information tab.
